About This Game
Forester is a colony sim that cares more about people than about production lines. Everyone in it has a temperament, a creed, a trade they are getting better at, opinions about the others, and a memory. They fall out. They grieve. They freeze if you have not built a roof.
You start with two people and an axe. You fell, you build, you farm, you bake, you forge, you mine, you smelt, and you wall the town — and every one of those is gated behind something you had to research first, paid for out of a treasury that only exists because somebody sold something at a market you had to build.
Around your clearing is the whole of Europe on the same map. Zoom out far enough and the ground gives way to the continent, with its crowns going to war, seizing each other's land, and eventually noticing you. You can chart it, trade with it, put agents in its cities and march on them.
And it keeps a record. Every birth, death, law, harvest, plague and battle goes into the chronicle, so that when you finally call the reckoning you can read back the whole life of the place you built.
Game Features
- The ColonyFell, build, farm, bake, forge, mine, smelt and wall the town — twenty-five buildings, each behind its own technology.
- The PeopleRecruit wanderers at the gate by talking them round. Appoint mayors to run daughter towns. Keep everyone fed, housed, paid and at peace.
- Running a Big ColonyHold the world still or run it at three times the pace. A map in the corner, a steward’s list of what needs seeing to, the colony’s books charted year by year, idle hands found with one key, and work queued with Shift.
- Faith and LawProclaim a creed or don't. Set taxes, write edicts, and live with what that does to the people who disagree.
- The WorldA live Europe of a hundred-odd cities: trade pacts you negotiate and then have to keep, scouts, spies, war parties and sieges.
- Two Tech TreesGrowth and military, thirty-odd technologies, each one opening a building, a trade or a weapon.
- Seasons That BiteWinter closes the fields and kills anyone without a roof. The colony that did not stockpile does not see spring.
- The EndA reckoning you can call whenever the ambitions are in hand — and a chronicle of everything that led to it.
- Your Saves Are YoursSix slots, and any colony can be written out to a file you keep on your own machine.
